Speaker Bio's

 

  • Sherry Askwith, L.C.S.W.-C .

    Sherry Askwith is known for her work with ADHD-diagnosed children and adults in Montgomery County as well as her onsite teacher trainings, school-based workshops, and articles on ADHD, parenting, and mental health issues. She provides assessment, treatment, and trainings for children and adults diagnosed with ADHD, including a quarterly class for parents of ADHD children and ongoing therapy groups for children, adolescents, and adults. This year, she will also be conducting a workshop for adults married to ADHD-diagnosed individuals and offering lunchtime interactional workshops on parenting issues at local corporations. In addition to Sherry's work with ADHD, she provides treatment to families, couples and individuals dealing with other mental health issues. She serves on the Professional Advisory Board of Montgomery County CHADD and acts as its coordinator. Sherry is particularly interested in the impact of differing perceptual abilities and communication styles on relationships. She is currently writing two books for children, including one on the brain and ADHD. She is accredited locally and nationally and maintains a private practice in Gaithersburg, MD.

 

  • Myron “Mike” Brenner, M.D.

    Dr. Brenner is a psychiatrist in private practice in Pikesville. He is the medical director for Life Timing.

  • Ellen A. Callegary, Esq.

    Ellen Callegary has been a practicing attorney for twenty-four years and is a founding partner of the law firm of  Callegary & Steedman, P.A. that focuses on special education, disability and family law issues.  Ellen is a Member of  the Education Advocacy Coalition for Students with Disabilities.  She was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women for 2000 by The Daily Record.  She is the Chair of the Juvenile Law Committee of The Bar Association of Baltimore City, the immediate past president of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, a for the past ten years, and a former Women’s Law Center Board Member.

 

  • Harold Cohen, Ph.D.

    Dr. Cohen is a licensed paramedic, Services from Walden University, and is a Diplomat of the American College of Healthcare Executives as well as a Baltimore County Fire Department Division Chief, is an advocate for adults with AD/HD. Actively involved in Adult AD/HD research, he has published research on AD/HD in the work environment and serves on the Governor’s Task Force on AD/HD.

     

  • Gustavo A. Goldstein, M.D.

    Dr. Goldstein obtained his medical diploma at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Elementary School Education and served as a counselor for children in several capacities. In Argentina, he completed the Residence Training in General Surgery and worked as Emergency Room physician for several years. After migrating to the United States, Dr. Goldstein pursued a career in the psychiatric field. He completed Residency Training Programs in Adult, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Washington DC. As part of the Montgomery County Mental Health and the Children's National Medical Center staffs, he has worked with a broad range population including severely mentally ill adults and children in outpatient and inpatient settings. Additionally, for the past four years Dr. Goldstein has specialized in the legal aspects of psychiatry, obtaining his Special Qualifications Board in Forensic Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry. Dr. Goldstein belongs to the American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. He has served as speaker in several National Mental Health Association's training programs, Congressional briefings and radio and television programs. Currently Dr. Goldstein is the psychiatric consultant for the Child and Adolescent Forensic Evaluation Services of Montgomery County, serving the needs of the Juvenile Court, and has a private practice in Rockville, Maryland.

 

  • Rosie Greenberg, M.Ed.

    Ms. Greenberg received her M. Ed. degree from Florida Atlantic University in Exceptional Child Education and her Certificate of Advanced Study in Administration and Supervision in early childhood education. With thirty years teaching experience, she has held positions as resource teacher, teacher trainer, and assistant principal. Ms. Greenberg is presently an educational consultant and director of The Learning Link in Montgomery County.

 

  • Deborah M. Fisher, Ph.D.

    Dr. Deborah Fisher received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. Since 1980, she has been working in the Washington, DC metropolitan area with children, adolescents, and adults specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and remediation of learning disabilities, AD/HD, and school and workplace problems. In addition, Dr. Fisher works with individuals, couples, families, and groups dealing with a variety of concerns, including depression and anxiety disorders, relationship difficulties, and behavior management and parenting skills, as well as providing a full range of psychological and neuropsychological assessment services. She leads therapy groups for adults, spouses and parents dealing with AD/HD. Dr. Fisher consults with employers, schools, physicians and insurance companies in the diagnosis and treatment of learning disabilities, AD/HD, emotional and neuropsychological areas of concern. Dr. Fisher is a professional advisor in the Montgomery County CHADD Adult Support Group. She maintains her private practice in Bethesda, MD.

 

  • Patricia Latham, J.D.

    Mrs. Latham, an attorney who has specialized in legal issues pertaining to AD/HD and LD, serves on the national board of L.D.A., the Learning Disability Association of America, and was the co-founder, with her husband, Peter Latham, J.D., of the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the Law. Patricia Latham lectures frequently on topics related to AD/HD and the law.

  • Kerch McConlogue, C.P.C.C.

    Kerch McConlogue is a personal coach for adults with AD/HD who know they are capable of more and want to prove it. With more than twenty years as small business owner, Kerch is a member of the CHADD of Greater Baltimore board of directors, Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA), the Guild of American Papercutters, and is President Elect of the Baltimore Regional Chapter National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). She is a volunteer program screener for Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore (WEB) and workshop leader on time management for entrepreneurs.

 

  • Matthew Kamins, M.Ed.

    Mr. Kamins, supervisor of psychological services for M.C.P.S., is the administrator for all M.C.P.S.’s psychologists. He coordinates and oversees testing and related services. Mr. Kamins has helped to develop a new and exciting program called Collaborative Action Process being piloted in schools in the county, which offers alternatives, prevention plans, and training teamwork to avoid crises. The Process involves families, students, schools, and the community.

 

  • Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D.

    Dr. Kathleen Nadeau is a recognized authority in the area of AD/HD. She is Director of Chesapeake Psychological Services in Silver Spring, MD and offers psychological services to adults and teens with ADD. She a member of the Professional Advisory Board of CHADD National and CHADD of Montgomery County. Among others, she is the author of "Adventures in Fast Forward" and "The Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorders". She is the author of several other publications dealing with AD/HD.

 

  • Jane Snider, Ed.D.

    Dr. Snider is the founding Director of the Summit School, a small private school for children who have language learning difficulties in Edgewater, MD. Dr. Snider's career includes university teaching at the George Washington University, work as an educational diagnostician and placement specialist, and the conceptualization and development of the Summit School. Now in its 14th year, with over 100 students, The Summit School represents a model program for the Greater Washington, D. C. area and the Baltimore corridor. Dr. Snider has trained and inspired her professional staff to help her implement innovative programming for children and youth who have dyslexia and learning disabilities, as well as provided information, training and support to families.

 

  • Ruth B. Spodak, Ph.D.

    Dr. Spodak is a Psychologist with over twenty-five years' experience in the field of learning disabilities and Attention Disorder. She is currently Director of Ruth Spodak & Associates, a private organization specializing in evaluation, counseling and advocacy for individuals with learning disabilities, attention problems and related behavioral issues. Dr. Spodak organized and directed the Center School, a private school for children with learning disabilities. She has been involved in teacher training, curriculum development, and parent education. Dr. Spodak has taught at the University level, authored many articles, and has specialized in evaluating the gifted/learning disabled individual. Dr. Spodak graduated from Brown University and completed her graduate training at the University of Maryland.

 

  • Judith Stern, M.A.

    Judy Stern is an educational consultant in private practice specializing in the educational issues of students with ADHD and/or Learning Disabilities. She provides workshops locally and nationally to schools and parent groups, consultation to parents and study skills classes for students during the summer and school year. She also provides individualized remedial reading tutoring. Ms. Stern is the author of five books for children on attention and learning disorders, as well as several articles on these topics.

 

  • Diana Thompson, M.Ed.

    Dr. Thompson is a special educator, she works in the Parent Information Training Center to help administer services available to all families of M.C.P.S. students.  This includes organizing and holding educational workshops, working with the M.C.C.P.T.A., and participating in the training the special needs chairpersons from each school.  She also helps in developing a handbook and list of resources for distribution, as well as taking parent phone calls when there is a concern about a child’s education.

 

  • Carol Watkins, M.D.

    Dr. Watkins is a psychiatrist in private practice. She serves on the Professional Advisory Board of CHADD of Greater Baltimore and was the CHADD National Volunteer of the Year in 2001.
